Trading Time is my fourth project in which I use the French knot embroidery stitch to interrogate ideas around labor and value. In this ongoing project, I teach others to make French knots. I meet with each participant one-on-one and ask them to first answer four questions on a small card: 1) age, 2) gender, 3) occupation, 4) what is your time worth?
As I teach them knot-making, conversations naturally arise about the value of time and the value of the hand. At the end of the lesson, I offer to exchange my French knots for theirs. Afterward, I write a brief reflection about our time together.
